You’re welcome.
Object-oriented web development?
The Problem
So web development can be a real pain right? I mean, I <3 web dev but sometimes, when I pull up a website in IE7 I just want to be sick. Looking at HTML and CSS, I feel like I’m working with hieroglyphs. They’re inflexible, not scalable, barely maintainable and bare little resemblence to other forms of development.
The Solution?
Why not abstract the developer from writing HTML and CSS? Why not create a framework for building an entire site out of Javascript that is fully object-oriented, with inheritance, scalability, and ultimate maintainability?
Asking myself these questions, I decided to come up with a quick proof-of-concept and transcendJS was born. Check it out/fork it here: https://github.com/hudsonfoo/transcendJS
Neglecting my website like a boss
Here I am at 35k feet, writing my first blog post in months. I’ve been busy (which is great) and I want to let you know what I’ve been up to. Please understand, this is not an apology. This is a celebration of the last four months of awesomeness in my life and trying to jump back into the community.
- May – Fought for a righteous cause and won. Feels great!
- June – Started working for IdeaLoop, which is a fantastic company of dedicated web developers like me.
- June-ish/July/August – Pulling major hours leading a HUGE project. Flexing my JavaScript/Front-end dev skillz.
- July – Submitted some code to the Dojo Toolkit. Imagine my surprise when it was accepted! I’m officially a contributor to a major JavaScript library.
- August – Had lunch with Brian Duffy, an astronaut and the first person to board the international space station. Yeah… I totally did that.
All in all, it’s been productive, hectic, stressful, and some of the best months of my life. Now that things are (only somewhat) slowing down, I’m going to make more time for these posts and start getting back into local web nerd events. Maybe catch a speaking gig here or there?
Speaking Gigs
For all the folks who were at my latest session entitled “Responsive Design: A judy-chop to the face”, here are my slides as promised. For the incredibly unfortunate few that could not attend, this is a judy-chop.
Miss the session? Can’t get enough?
I’ll be speaking again at BarCamp in Conway on June 2nd. If you are a connoisseur of awesome, you should attend.
RE: WEB TYPE WILL SAVE US
I just wanted to say how absolutely proud I am that the great Jeff Zeldman of zeldman.com wrote about TypeButter, a jQuery plugin that I developed in collaboration with designer/typographer Joel Richardson. I hope that one day, browsers will begin supporting optical kerning for the web but until that day comes… TypeButter! Read Zeldman’s article and check out TypeButter.com. For good measure, you should also check out another plugin I’ve developed called jQuery Bacon which allows you to align text to a bezier curve.
